The House of Representatives just canceled a vote on a bill that would renew the Patriot Act and expand the FBI’s surveillance abilities after Donald Trump tweeted he’d veto it.

The bill, called the "USA FREEDOM Reauthorization Act of 2020," would have re-authorized the expired surveillance devices by Dec. 1, 2023 and made adjustments aimed at better protecting those under government surveillance. Earlier, the bill was passed 80-16 in the Senate.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer’s (D-Md.) office announced that “members are advised that votes are no longer expected in the house tonight,” after the bill was delayed multiple time. Hoyer also said that Republican members that previously supported the bill are rethinking their vote on the instruction of Trump.

Trump tweeted on Wednesday that he would “quickly VETO” the legislation if it landed on his desk.

In a letter to Democratic colleagues, Nancy Pelosi said it was necessary to cancel the vote after saying that she didn’t have enough votes to override the veto. In addition, she said she would send a original version of the bill back to the Senate.
