Joe Biden apologized Friday for his remarks about telling African American voters in an interview “you ain’t black” if they’re deciding between him or Trump.

During an interview on the radio-show “The Breakfast Club,” Joe Biden made controversial comments about his links to the African American community, saying “you ain’t black” if “you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump.”

“You’ve got questions. Well, I tell you, if you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.”

His comments come after Charlamagne tha God questioned him on his record on racial issues, as well as asking if his vice president would be a black woman.

“Take a look at my record, man. I extended the Voting Right Act 25 years. I have a record that is second-to-none. The NAACP has endorsed me every time I’ve run. I mean, come on. Take a look at the record.”

In a call with the U.S. Black Chamber of Commerce, Biden emphasized regret for the statement, saying they were “really unfortunate” and adding that he “shouldn’t have been such a wise guy.”

“I shouldn’t have been so cavalier in responding,” Biden said during the call. “No one should have to vote for any party, based on their race or religion or background,” he shared.

“I know that the comments have come off like I was taking the African American folks for granted, but nothing could be further from the truth,” Biden admitted.

“I’ve never ever done that, and I’ve earned it every time I’ve ran. I was making the point that I have never taken a vote for granted,’ he said.

Biden’s senior adviser Synome Sanders tweeted about his comments, saying they were made “in jest,” but saying that “he was making the distinction that he would put his record with the African American community up against Trump’s any day.”
