Joe Biden picked up enough delegates from the June 2 primaries to win the Democratic Party nomination to face the incumbent president Donald J. Trump, NBC News projects

In order to win the Democratic Party’s nomination, a candidate must pick up 1,991 delegates from the total of 3,979 delegates available.

Biden went into the weekend with 1,970 delegates and has been the presumptive Democratic nominee since Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders dropped out on April 8.

“It was an honor to compete alongside one of the most talented groups of candidates the Democratic party has ever fielded — and I am proud to say that we are going into this general election a united party,” Biden said in a statement Friday evening.

Biden will officially be nominated at the Democratic National Convention, which has been rescheduled to August 17-20 due to the coronavirus after intending to have the convention in mid-July.

Biden’s campaign had a bumpy start: He finished fourth in Iowa, and fifth in New Hampshire. His campaign got a boost after coming in second to Sanders in Nevada, however his campaign didn’t accelerate until the South Carolina primary where he beat Sanders, picking up 39 delegates to Sanders 15.
